So, during Week 5 of HBA, I went on the 社会调查 (Social Study Trip) to Xi'an. We had to write a report and present it, so I decided I'd put it up on my blog! I hope you find it interesting!
Hello, everyone!
The Yellow River...
Fast flowing water...
Tall, green mountains...
A blue sky...
A small rainbow!
The "son" of the "mother river," the Yellow River gave birth to Chinese civilization
Everything good has a good and bad side.
FLOODING!!! (These aren't my own pictures!)
China's Great Sorrow, since it killed so many people throughout it's history.
A very simple diagram explaining the parts of a dam. Basically, a flood happens when the water level rises above that of the dikes. That's because the Yellow River deposits silt on the river bed, so the water level rises at around 4 cm/yr, so eventually it'll reach the top or the dike will break. This type of flood is exceptionally devastating because the water can no longer go back into the original path, thus altering the course of the Yellow River. Throughout its history, the Yellow River has changed paths around 25 times.
Military uses of the Yellow River: destroy the rival's dams and it will be disastrous for them!
Technology improves the quickest when humanity is faced with serious challenges. The rate of technological advancement during wartime far surpasses that during peacetime.
Water pollution is a problem. When I was interviewing the Yellow River, I asked it: "How do you feel about the water pollution?" Although it did not give me an answer, I think it's safe to conclude that it's not particularly happy about it. Also, the Sun looks down upon this kind of water pollution!
We should protect the Yellow River! Just like the many museums and historical sites in Xi'an, the Yellow River has many years of rich history, and thus deserves to be preserved!
THANK YOU!
